Successes within RELX

LexisNexis consolidated its content management, document enhancement and mining systems onto HPCC Systems. In doing this, they discovered that the elapsed time taken to perform an enrichment pass of the entire data collection dropped from 6/8 weeks to less than 1 day. This is such a significant change that it means they can increase the degree of enrichment into capabilities that were previously out of reach. Learn more about their challenges and solution here.

Also within RELX, HPCC Systems has enhanced SciVal which is an analytical solution used by research institutions to get access to facts which support decision making. SciVal users can now customize their own visualizations generated in just a few seconds from the almost 40 terabytes of data underpinning the tool. Since HPCC Systems can both crunch huge, predefined requests offline as well as smaller calculations in real time on customer generated data slices, users of SciVal can get structured information immediately upon implementation as well as having the flexibility to tailor-make their own view of the data. Sandia National Laboratories discovered that HPCC Systems met the challenge of sorting through petabytes of data to find correlations and helped them to generate hypotheses. Watch a video featuring Dr Richard Murphy speaking about their new supercomputer.

The Office of the Medicaid Inspector General (OMIG) of a north-eastern US state used HPCC Systems to help pinpoint fraud, waste and abuse of the system. HPCC Systems enabled them to identify the hidden relationships between million-dollar condo dwellers and their assets, providers, medical facilities or others providing care to the state’s Medicaid recipients. They were able to sort, link, join and analyse 50 terabytes of public data to find evidence of fraud committed by a group of state Medicaid recipients who were all living in the same high end condominium complex. Our technology has also been used as a resource to help find missing children. LexisNexis has partnered with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) to develop the ADAMSM Program (Automated Delivery of Alerts on Missing children) which uses technology to distribute missing child posters to police, news media, schools, businesses, medical centers and other recipients within a specific geographic search area. To date, 155 children have been reunited with their families as a result of the ADAM Program. Read about our involvement in this project here.

GuardHat Technologies. In September 2015, Anupam Sengupta, CTO of GuardHat Technologies, spoke at the HPCC Systems Engineering Summit about his IoT project, which is a startup and less than a year old. They are making a smart hat which will help to save the lives and reduce the number of work related injuries of people working in the industrial workplace. As well as processing historical data, real time data is collected from each hat every 300 milliseconds and visualizations are displayed. Having looked at a number of other solutions they realised that they were having problems integrating a number of different technologies. It was simply taking them too long to get going. Since HPCC Systems can be a complete solution, they were able to get going faster and more importantly, get the answers they wanted from their data when they wanted it.  You can watch Anupam Sengupta’s presentation here:

CPL Online. At the same event, David Dasher, MD, CPL Online also spoke about why they chose HPCC Systems to underpin their e-learning solution. The company started 5 years ago and they have been experiencing 100% year on year growth. The number of users and transactions was growing so fast that their existing solution couldn’t keep up. HPCC Systems helped them to improve performance, scalability and productivity. For a single user, they discovered that HPCC Systems was, on average, 65% faster at returning the datasets they required than their SQL predecessor. In addition to this, their reporting facility runs 95% faster on HPCC Systems. They have also found the ECL Language so easy to understand and learn that instead of needing the 8 developers predicted they only need 4 who are twice as productive.
